Imagine being able to identify which areas of the brain are causing specific mood states like feelings of depression or feelings of anxiousness. Imagine being able to identify which areas of the brain are making it hard for you to focus, remember things or keep up without feeling overwhelmed. Now imagine, that you can see these areas and similar to strengthening a weak muscle, you can actually train these areas (networks) to be more efficient and more stable. And, as you do this, various cognitive, psychological, emotional and physical issues begin to improve.
It’s called 3-D Deep Brain Neurofeedback. It’s noninvasive, non-intrusive, easy to do and represents a revolution in the field of neurofeedback. Also known as Loreta Z-Score Neurofeedback, this simple yet highly advanced form of brain training, is producing more powerful results and in far less time than anything that has come before it.
When Neurofeeedback first got started in the 1960’s, it was quite rudimentary and generally involved using just one sensor placed on the head to read the surface brainwaves. Computers could only handle so much data and this meant that the process was highly limited. Still, however, results were gaining more and more interest in university and research centers.
Almost 40 years later, in 2000 , Frank Duffy, MD, Neurologist, Head of the Neuroimaging Department and of Neuroimaging Research at Boston Children’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School Professor, conducted an independent review of the literature on neurofeedback for Clinical Electroencephalography (2000). He summarized his findings as follows:
“The literature, which lacks any negative study of substance, suggests that EEG biofeedback therapy should play a major therapeutic role in many difficult areas. In my opinion, if any medication had demonstrated such a wide spectrum of efficacy, it would be universally accepted and widely used. “
From its inception in the 1960’s, neurofeedback has continued to evolve. First with one sensor, then with two, then four and now using the Loreta Z-Score Neurofeedback system, a full 19 sensors are reading the brainwaves! And, not just the surface brainwaves, but for the first time, deep areas in the brain are now able to be seen… With neurofeedback, if you can see it, you can train it.
However, an even greater breakthrough coming from the latest neuroscience research, has been the discovery that the brain does not work in isolation but rather, works in networks: Highly specialized areas that work together simultaneously to produce specific moods, cognitive states and can make the difference between functioning very well or functioning very poorly. This can be occurring either cognitively, emotionally, psychologically or physically involving a whole host of functions or dysfunctions.
For those who are struggling with feelings of depression, there is a network in the brain that specifically regulates feelings of happiness or sadness. For those with feelings of anxiousness, there is a different network that regulates feelings of worry, being overwhelmed or not handling stress well. There is a network for attention, focus and mental clarity. Another, that deals with organization, planning and staying on task. Also, a specific network just for memory. Another, that focuses on addiction and others that regulate compulsive thoughts/behaviors, pain, sensory input/output and even the ability to feel comfortable and confident around others, called the Social Network.
Rather than guessing as to where and with what parameters to train the brain (a typical issue with other forms of neurofeedback –making it less effective and sometimes producing temporary unwanted side effects), we can now directly train specific networks that relate to only the areas that you want improve.
The process although quite simple to do is actually, quite a monumental achievement, made possible only through advanced research of thousands of fMRI, PET and EEG scans. Highly complex mathematically algorithms are used to compute the locations of these deep brain networks and the training is only now possible due to the massive computing power of today’s super high speed computers.
There are now over 700 studies that have correlated LORETA’s studies with fMRI results. The mathematical equations behind LORETA have been published in peer reviewed journals. The first paper was published in 2003 so the work has been going on since about 2002. LORETA NFB research has shown proof of concept. There have been studies that show after LORETA NFB changes, there are improvements in areas such as attention, mood, cognition, etc. And there are many case studies showing significant clinical changes. STEP 2 – TRAINING PLAN
The next step is to identify what is blocking your way, and design your brain training program.
This is done via a QEEG Brain Map. A brain map involves a set of sensors fixed to cap; it looks and feels like a swimming cap. The sensors listen to the electrical impulses from your brain, giving us details of your brain activity so we can design your brain training program.
This assessment time also gives you the chance to meet your neurofeedback trainer, see what we do, and find out what you can expect from the training.
STEP 3 – NEUROFEEDBACK SESSIONS
A neurofeedback trainer runs the session; you recline in a comfortable chair while the sensor cap reads your brain activity. This activity activates brain-generated feedback in the form of a video, a game, sounds or music.
Sessions are approximately 60- 90 minutes (training time for children may be shorter). At regular intervals, we do a fresh QEEG brain map to track, modify and adjust your training to ensure best results and up-to-date training.
Depending upon the individual, it is not uncommon to begin seeing results even after your first brain training session. However, to create the most desired amount of change, you will need to continue with your training as your brain begins to form new connections that will last over time. A minimum of 10 (ten) sessions is enough to begin seeing positive improvement, but it is likely that you will require closer to 20 sessions so that the brain can lock-in these changes without reverting back to its pre-trained state.
